Dear Parents/Guardians,
Welcome to all families new and returning! I hope you all had a relaxing and enjoyable summer vacation. I can't believe we are starting another school year. This year, I will be working closely with Kindergarten through 8th grade, running weekly Social Emotional Learning (SEL) classes. Social Emotional Learning is the process through which children begin to learn, understand and manage their emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. This is an essential part of student growth; it gives them the social skills and emotional awareness they need to excel within the school and their communities. Each month, I will introduce a new theme that focuses on a specific topic while incorporating what it means to be a good citizen, student, and peer. This year we will also be talking about internet/personal safety and healthy habits. The 8th graders will have the opportunity to begin exploring their high school options and will learn how to navigate their high school's website for the course catalog. They will also participate in a whole-class Compassion Project, which they will work on throughout the school year.
Along with being the school counselor, I am also the Special Education Director here at St. John Paul II. If you have any questions regarding your child's services, or believe that your child may need special education services, please contact me.
Please keep an eye out on my school website where I will post information on the monthly topics along with family conversation starters and resources you can use at home to help reinforce what was learned.
My door is always open to my students, and I am available for individual counseling and small group counseling on an as needed basis. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to me at any point throughout the school year. You can contact me at (631) 727-1650 or via email at cnarus@sjp2regional.org.
Sincerely,
Christa Narus
